T op 50 builders criteria Voted #1—13 Years in a Row! Pool and Spa News
Criteria for choosing the Top 50 Builders Pool & Spa News is proud to unveil the 2025 Top 50 Builders, a recognition reflecting excellence across the industry. Selection involved a rigorous process based on five key criteria, ensuring a well-rounded representation of top companies. Revenue Total residential construction revenue, including new construction and renovations, had the greatest impact on overall scores. Staff A company is only as strong as its people. This criterion considered employee tenure, training, and industry certifications — areas where we invest heavily to ensure expert craftsmanship and service. Industry Involvement Firms that collaborate strengthen the industry. Participation in associations, buyer groups, and other networks is highly valued, and we actively engage to stay at the forefront of trends and best practices.

Web Presence Forward-looking companies use digital platforms to enhance their brand. Scores reflected website design, usability, educational value, and social media engagement — areas where we continually innovate to keep clients informed and inspired. Community Involvement Good citizenship is good business. Part of each builder’s score is based on community and cause participation, and we take pride in giving back to the neighborhoods we serve.

TOP 50 BUILDERS
Q&A This year, the leaders of our Top 50 Builders were asked: What’s the best business ad vice or tip you’ve heard in the last 12 months?
6. MOREHEAD POOLS
4. SHASTA POOLS
9. ROBERTSON POOLS
Michael Moore II | CEO/ President
Skip Ast Jr. | President
Ron Robertson | Owner
Some of the best advice we’ve received came from Jim Younger, president and CEO of Younger Brothers Construction: “Sometimes, you have to BREAK something that doesn’t seem broken — so you can fix it even better.” The most innovative companies aren’t afraid to tear down and rebuild — not because they have to, but because they see a way to make it even stronger. This advice has pushed us to challenge our own status quo, leading to game-changing moves like: Bringing marketing in-house for faster, more authentic customer education; unifying our new pool and remodel construction divisions for better efficiency and communication; using video communication to transform how we connect with potential buyers. In a world where comfort zones kill growth, this mindset has helped us stay ahead of the curve, rather than chasing it.
We have strategically pivoted our focus towards expanding and enhancing our renovation, service, and maintenance divisions. This shift in priorities has not only allowed us to adapt to changing market conditions but has also positioned us for continued growth. As a result, we were able to invest in and successfully integrate a third plaster rig into our fleet by the close of 2024.
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage.” — Eleanor Roosevelt This quote resonated with me on a business level. I think that sometimes I can be guilty of letting fear of change create inaction within my business, and this quote helped me overcome that by realizing constant change and evolution is necessary.
1. CODY POOLS
3. GIB-SAN POOL & LANDSCAPE CREATIONS Ed Gibbs | President and CEO Best business tip or advice I heard in the last 12 months was to embrace AI and software automation while still providing platinum customer service. It is challenging with multi generations. Customer service automation has negatively influenced the customer experience. Despite the ease of access and increased speed in response, it has also left people feeling disconnected from brands and the information they require. We have been methodical about implementing softwares and AI at a pace that does not compromise our customers need for platinum service and personalized problem solving.
Mike Church | President/ CEO
Focus on the customer experience above all else. A well-built pool is important, but the way a customer feels throughout the entire process is what truly sets a company apart. Clear communication, transparency, and exceeding expectations at every step create lasting relationships and a strong reputation. Happy customers don’t just bring referrals — they become lifelong advocates for your brand.
7. RIVERBEND SANDLER POOLS Bruce Mungiguerra Jr. | Chief Executive Officer The best advice I received in the past year is to diversify our distribution partners. Given the current market conditions and economic climate, this strategy is crucial for managing risks, negotiating prices, gaining a competitive advantage, and ensuring supply chain stability.
10. VAN KIRK & SONS POOLS & SPAS Tim & Robert Van Kirk| Co- Owners Marketing plays a crucial role when executed effectively. Leveraging and understanding the latest technology has become essential in today’s marketing landscape. By integrating tools like AI and social media, we’re able to push the boundaries, enhance our outreach, and elevate our brand.
2. CLAFFEY POOLS
Charlie Claffey | GM
5. KEITH ZARS POOLS
Keith Zars | Owner
As with every team member (whether long tenured or new), culture is defined by what you do each day; not some words written on the wall. I was reminded of a saying that our dad told my brother, sister, and I in 2002 when we bought the business: “Do the right thing even when it hurts.” Since 1987, Claffey Pools has made every effort to “do the right thing even when it hurts,” for our team members and each and every client we serve.
Success is not from luck, it’s from hard work.
8. RICHARD’S TOTAL BACKYARD SOLUTIONS JR Richard | President/GM When the over all market is down, lean in aggressively promoting your business to gain market share during a down market.

Design Consultation at Homesite. The designer meets on-site with homeowners to define vision, goals, and budget. This technical assessment analyzes property elevations and measurements to ensure the design is tailored to the unique needs of the customer, and is technically sound. Design Review Presentation at our Showroom - Central Florida’s Largest! Following the on-site consultation, the homeowner visits our APS office, Central Florida’s largest indoor pool showroom , to finalize plans with their assigned Designer. This review covers material selection for tile, pavers, and finishes to ensure their ideal selections are met. Final costs and the contract agreement are then completed. HOA Approval / Permitting / Pre-Site The APS team provides all construction drawings, including 3D renderings for HOA approval and necessary access letters. American Pools and Spas manages all city and county permits to ensure compliance. During this stage, a pre-site manager visits the property to verify site readiness before construction begins. Onsite Meeting - Super. / Sales The project Superintendent and Sales Representative meet with the homeowner on-site to review job details and establish communication through Microsoft Teams.
Layout / Dig / Steel Following the on-site meeting, our Team schedules and oversees the excavation of the homeowner’s new pool. Gunite Prior to shooting Gunite, all rebar, electrical bonding, and necessary inspections are completed to ensure a strong and safe structure. Tile, Plumbing and Water Features Once the Gunite has cured, the APS team installs tile, plumbing, and any water features according to the homeowners design specifications. Deck & Coping Using in-house paver crews, the deck and coping are installed according to the finalized plan. Superintendents conduct a quality check walk-through following this phase to ensure a smooth transition toward project completion. Fence or Screen Enclosure Florida law requires an approved safety barrier around residential swimming pools, such as fencing or a screen enclosure. Screen enclosures provide additional benefits by reducing insects and debris; enclosures are designed and built in-house using advanced manufacturing processes to ensure a durable and premium product.

Depth Matters: Designing the pool with Function in Mind Children or Lounging: A sun shelf (typically 3 to 5 inches deep) provides a safe environment for young children or a shallow area for adult relaxation. Casual Swimming: A minimum depth of 3-5 feet allows comfortable movement while preventing contact with the pool floor. L ap swimming: For effective exercise, a minimum depth of 4 feet and a lane length of at least 25 feet are recommended. Estimates significantly below market value often involve inferior materials, inexperienced labor, or overlooked details. In custom pool building, quality is the primary driver of value. Investing in superior craftsmanship prevents costly structural corrections later. Our Best Advice: Clarifying the Vision Determining whether the goal is a high-energy environment with slides and splash zones or a serene escape featuring sun shelves and elegant lighting is a vital first step. Establishing a clear vision early in the process ensures the final design aligns with the desired preferences. Be Wary of Bargain Bids

What Goes Wrong?
1. Under
Homeowners often don’t realize the complexity; design, engineering, layout, permitting, mechanicals, and more. Inexperienced or fly-by-night builders can lead to costly errors, or walk off the job. Low bids can mean cut corners, poor workmanship, and subpar materials that cost more in the long run. A beautiful pool might lack function, comfort, or proper integration with your home and yard. Relying on 2D plans or guesswork can lead to confusion, change orders, and unmet expectations.
